Assistive Bath Chair

Client is a 4-year-old boy living with cerebral palsy and cortical visual impairment. Considering the physical component, he has limited sitting balance, uses a wheelchair and walker for mobility, and has limitations in grasp and reach in the upper extremities. Client’s current postural stability requires constant supervision and maximal support to ensure safety while bathing. When looking at the psychosocial component, he enjoys laying down and playing in the bath. Participation and inclusion were voiced as extremely important to the caregiver and client. To consider the cognitive aspects, he is participating fully in school and although he is non-verbal, he communicates with his family and peers through adaptive strategies.

This project aims to design and develop a bath seat device that will enable our client to participate in play, bathing, and social activities during bathing time.

Important considerations throughout the design process within the CPPF Framework:

  • Safety while using the device.

  • Client enjoyment when using the device.

  • Useability by client's caregivers – simple, durable, easy to put together and take apart.

  • Meeting the needs of the client – promoting sitting, reaching, grasping.

  • Multi-purpose use – device can be transported to various locations for additional use.

Key Features: PVC piping + solid body base. Hinge reclining. Mesh cushioning. Assistive grab bar. Rubber feet.

Pros: Can be partially disassembled and folded for easy storage and transportation. Freely reclinable. Detachable grab bar promotes user independence. Minimal user assembly required. Slim backing to maximize comfort. Slip proof.

Cons: Potentially vulnerable to damage, should piping detach during use. Hinge is a potential point of failure.
